June General Meeting Presentation

Presented by CPCUG’s

LINUX SIG

Chuck Dragga

This one may be your Grandmother’s Linux.

The thing that has prevented many people from using linux is that the fear that it is difficult to install and it just doesn’t offer the programs they need to be productive. It s said by the Linux community if grandma can use it then it is ready for prime time.

Well, Linux is getting there and these concerns are quickly going away with the rash of new usable linux desktop operating systems appearing on the scene in the past year. Some of those you may have heard of include Xandros, Linspire (formerly Lindows), Ubuntu, Knoppix, Red Hat, and SUSE. One, we bet you’ve never heard of is PCLinuxOS.

After exploring many of the different desktop’s, our Linux SIG,thinks this is one of the best and they are going to show it off to the group. They will show how you can run it from the CD, install it on a machine, and show off all it’s bells and whistles (ie programs that you can use to become instantly productive or just have fun with). They will also be giving away some copies of it and will show you were you can download it off the internet as it is free as in “free beer”.
